NOBEL PRIZE WINNERS: William D. Phillips – Nobel Laureate in Physics – awarded for the development of methods to cool and trap atoms with laser light. Mairead Corrigan – Nobel Peace Prize – cofounder of Community of Peace People – advocating a nonviolent resolution of the Northern Ireland conflict. AUTHORS: Sister Helen Prejean, C.S.J. – Nominated for the Pulitzer Prize as author of the book “Dead Man Walking” and was also nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001. Provided supervision for the movie of the same name, starring Sean Penn and Susan Sarandon. Horton Foote – author of “Trip to Bountiful,” “Young Man from Atlanta,” “The Traveling Lady” and “The Chase,” among many others. Shelby Foote – author of “Follow Me Down,” “Love in a Dry Season” and “Shiloh,” among many others including a 3-volume history of the Civil War; a Guggenheim Fellow three times and narrator for the PBS series on the Civil War. MUSICIANS: Henry Mancini – arranger, performer and composer of many popular tunes including “Moon River,” “Pink Panther” and music scores for the films Pink Panther, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Days of Wine and Roses and TV series Peter Gunn and Charade. Burt Bacharach – noted arranger, performer and composer of popular tunes such as “Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head” and “I’ll Never Fall In Love Again,” as well as music scores including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.” Christian Lindberg – a distinguished Swedish trombonist, voted one of the five most prominent brass players of the 20th Century. He is frequently featured as a conductor and is a highly regarded composer. Davis Gaines – baritone soloist with virtually every major symphony orchestra in North America, including New York Pops at Carnegie Hall, and the Hollywood Bowl orchestra. He is probably best known for his title role in the Phantom of the Orchestra in over 2,000 appearances. Francesc de Paula Soler – “Poet of the Guitar,” known internationally as a master performer on the Spanish guitar, and as the Master Guitarist at the Conservatorio Superior de Musica de Barcelona (Spain). ATHLETES: Jim Sundberg – all-star catcher for the Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals, won several annual Golden Gloves and selected as American League all-star. Educators and Theologians: John Hare – Professor of Philosophy – Calvin College and Yale University, author of “The Moral Gap” and “God’s Call.” Nirund Jivasantikarn – President Yonok College, Bangkok and Lampang, Thailand. N. T. (Tom) Wright – Canon Theologian for Westminster Abbey, London England.
